Dear Parents & Carers,
It has been a busy few weeks at Dr Thomlinson Church of England Middle School.
Well done to the 48 pupils who had gained a TOP Award this half-term. Yesterday they enjoyed their hard earned reward with half of the group being taught the skills of origami by Mrs Moss whilst the other half worked with clay with Mrs Healy. I had the pleasure of sampling both the activities and they were both enjoyable and creative.
Children had to be equally creative in celebrating Number Day on Friday, February 2nd. It was lovely to see so many children coming to school as a number or wearing a number. I think the award for creative dress goes jointly to Mrs Moss and Mrs Ryan who came to school dressed as a homage to the numbers 1 & 8 although not necessarily in that sequence.
Unfortunately the sequence 1-0 were two numbers that fell the wrong way for our U13 Boys football team in the County Cup Quarter Final match on 31st January against Newminster. The narrow defeat still showed great credit to our performance – an especial well done to William in goal who was simply outstanding!
The day after on 1st February our U13 Boys Basketball team played well in a tournament at Chantry Middle School.
Unfortunately almost all other sports fixtures have been cancelled and rearranged because of the weather so we are expecting a very busy second half to the Spring Term.
I say almost because sleet, snow and mud are perfect conditions for Cross Country running and Bertie in Year 7 ran very well in the sleet and snow at the Northern Counties cross country finals held at Barnard Castle on Saturday February 3rd, finishing 17th and has made it through to the next (and final) stage. What started as representing the school at Gateshead in October will culminate in representing the school and Northumberland in the National Schools cross country championships in Leicestershire in March. Well done to Bertie for this fantastic achievement!
Cold weather is the perfect weather for reading and 45 students hit their Accelerated Reader target for this half term. They all enjoyed a special breakfast on Thursday morning and Ryan in Year 7 won the raffle, taking home a £10 Amazon voucher. The class competition was won by 6M, who knocked 60 off the top stop only in the last few days of the challenge!
We also have four new Word Millionaires (students who have read over a million words this academic year): Ava, Ava, Noah and Jacob. They all took home a new book to mark this great achievement.
Mrs Corbett and Mrs Battista are enjoying running Book Club for the first time this term. 7 students are thoroughly enjoying meeting on a weekly basis over lunch to read and discuss Bone Sparrow by Zana Fraillon. If you are looking for a new half-term read, we’d all recommend it – for adults and children alike!
