Proposed Sport and Leisure Facilities in Morpeth

9th July 2018Miss T Carnaby

Northumberland County Council are currently consulting on sport and leisure facilities in Morpeth and we are interested in your views on the attached proposal to locate shared school and community sports facilities on the King Edward VI School site. KEVI is one of the only high schools in the country without these type of facilities.

The aim is to provide high quality sports facilities on the school site to enable a broad school sport curriculum, significant extra-curricular sports activities, improve access to sport for all abilities, a community sports hub for local clubs and a community sports centre for the growing local population.

Additional benefits would include

  • a new vehicle entrance for the whole site to the North of the school which would improve road safety and congestion on Cottingwood Lane
  • create space within the school to add classrooms that accommodate the growing student population in Morpeth

An outline feasibility study is available to view here; if the proposal were supported further consultation would be needed to develop the detail.

Please can you follow this link to a short survey to help us understand your views.

Dear Parents / Carers,

I hope you had a lovely half-term.  It has been another productive week at Dr Thomlinson CofE Middle School.

Well done to our Year Young Leaders who helped run a Quadkids athletics event at King Edward VI High School on Wednesday morning.  The organisers were very impressed with their attitude and commitment.

It was attitude and commitment that secured our Year 5 & 6 pupils the “MCC Spirit of Cricket Trophy” on Thursday at a cricket festival in Alnwick.  Both teams were awarded this prize for their excellent attitude, behaviour and sportsmanship in the games and throughout the day.  The teams won 3 out of their 5 games.  The boys qualified for the semi-finals, losing narrowly to Shilbottle before beating Glendale in the play-off for third place.  Well done to all who were involved.

This week was Year 10 work experience week at King Edward’s and it was lovely to see three former pupils do their work experience at Dr Thomlinson’s – a big thank you to Matthew, Elizabeth and Laura.

Wednesday afternoon saw last term’s TOP Award Winners take part in a reward afternoon run by Mr Heath and Mr Parks – well done to all those who took part.

Message from the Headteacher – 25 May 2018

25th May 2018Miss T Carnaby

Dear Parents / Carers,

It has been a very busy two weeks at Dr Thomlinson Church of England Middle School.

Thank you to all those who contributed to the non-uniform day and cake sale on Friday, May 11th.  It was really successful and we raised £337.  This money will go toward the Year 8 Yearbooks.

The week beginning May 14th saw our Year 6 children take their Key Stage Two SAT tests.  We were all really impressed with the attitude and determination of all of our Year 6 during this week.  We know they have done their very best and we are very proud of their efforts.

Wednesday May 16th saw the school compete in the Bobby Robson Foundation five a’side tournament.   Our Year 5 mixed football finished 3rd in the group stage, beating St Joseph’s; Archibald Primary and St Peter and Paul with goals from Finley; Oscar and Kobi.  The team’s efforts qualified them for the semi final where goals from Kobi and Cerys saw Dr Thomlinson’s beat St Joseph’s 2-0.  Unfortunately we lost the final 3-0 to Bill Quay Primary but Mr Heath was still delighted with the team’s efforts.

Friday 18th May saw our Young Sports Leaders help out with the Quadkids First School Festival and once again Mr Heath was very appreciative of their efforts.

Whilst, for some Saturday, 19th May was FA Cup  Final Day – May 19th was definitely the “Magic Weekend” for over 50 Dr Thomlinson CofE Middle School children and their parents.  For the second consecutive year our school took part in the Rugby League extravaganza which is the Magic Weekend at St James’ Park , Newcastle.  Our children took part in a very complex dance routine that followed the match involving St Helens and Widnes on such hallowed turf.  Our children did very well and it was great to be involved in such a national sporting event.

Monday, May 21st saw our Year 5 & 6 children take part in a Quadkids Athletic event at King Edward’s, Morpeth and they all took part enthusiastically in the event.

Enthusiasm was definitely the order of the day when the “Year 6 SAT Ice Cream Van” visited Dr Thomlinson Cof E Middle School on Tuesday, May 22nd.  The van was part of a “reward experience” arranged by Vision Education and Year 6 were really pleased that they were able to visit our school.

If only Headmistress Miss Trunchbull was as kind to her students however our Year 6 students definitely enjoyed seeing her getting her comeuppance in the stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda at the Sunderland Empire on Wednesday, May 23rd.

Whilst Year 6 were watching Matilda, Year 5 were talking Greek…well, actually studying Greek through an exciting interactive day planned by the “History Bloke”.  He was also in school on Thursday giving a similar fun but challenging day of lessons on life in Britain during the Second World War for our Year 6 children.

Whilst Year 6 were looking at rationing, a large number of Year 7 & 8 students were enjoying a day of cricket at Longhirst.

As I write this our Year 5 children are returning from Kingswood.  They all look tired but excited.  Mrs Corbett has said that their behaviour was excellent.

Finally Yea r 6 today were enjoying a trip to Newcastle University to take part in a Campus Challenge event.  This event is designed to allow our pupils to visit the university and experience what it may be like to be a university student.  The aim of the day is to increase their aspirations and develop a thirst for higher education.  Pupils are taking a wide variety of workshops which includes a campus treasure hunt and a study skills session.  I am sure the day will have been very beneficial.

Have a lovely weekend.  We look forward to seeing you all on Monday, June 4th.

Take care,

Liam

Dear Parents / Carers,

It has been a very busy two weeks at Dr Thomlinson Church of England Middle School.

There have been a number of very successful sporting trips.  Well done to our KS3 Girls rugby team who showed great enthusiasm taking part in a rugby tournament at Morpeth on April 30th.  Equally enthusiastic were our Year 8 Sports Leaders who helped run a Year 3 & 4 Tag Rugby Festival at Chantry Middle School on Wednesday, May 2nd.

On Tuesday, May 8th our KS3 Girls football team took part in their second League football tournament.  They were extremely competitive against very good teams from the Duchess High School, Valley Gardens and Newminster Middle School.  Well done to Charlotte in Year 8 for scoring the goals for the team.  Ffion, Hazel and Olivia produced some particularly industrious performances.

On Wednesday, May 9th our KS3 Boys Rugby team took part in a rugby tournament at Kingston Park.  The team played very well and were victorious in all four of their matches.  Numerous tries were spread liberally around the team but Charlie and Tom were commended for their excellent efforts.

Thank you to all those students who took part in the launch of our after school Science Club.  The club will be running on consecutive Tuesday evenings until the end of the Summer term.

All of Year 8 take part in our “50 Book Challenge” and the six pupils who have read the most of these chosen 50 books are taking part in a reward trip to Barter Books in Alnwick this afternoon.  A special mention must go to Beth in Year 8 who managed to read all 50 of the books – a very notable achievement!

Thank you to all those who contributed to our Non-Uniform Day and Cake Sale, the proceeds will go towards the Year 8 Leaver Books.

Year 8 also enjoyed a very successful trip to the Centre for Life on Wednesday.  The trip further enhanced the learning of students for their current Earth in Space topic.  Keeping on the subject of Science, well done to the six winners of our British Science Week Poster competition.  The theme of the week was Discoveries and Exploration and children were invited to design a poster on this theme.  Five were chosen as prize winners and these were: Maddison, Ythan and Luke in Year 5 and Robert and Beth in Year 8.

I have been very impressed by the ongoing rehearsals for the Magic Rugby Weekend. Over 50 of our students will be taking part in the half-time dance routine on the Saturday of the Magic Rugby Weekend (an event that sees all the top Rugby League teams in the country come together to play a series of league fixtures at a single venue, namely St James’ Park.  The event takes place over the weekend of May 19th and May 20th and will clearly be the premier sporting event taking place in the country that weekend.  We are all looking forward to it.

Next week is Key Stage Two SAT week in which our Year 6 students will be taking tests in Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar; Reading and Maths.  We are very proud of the achievements of all our pupils and we know that our Year 6 will give their very best.

We have a weekly opportunity to thank those pupils who given their best through our Thomlinson Outstanding Pupil (TOP) award.

Message from the Headteacher – 20 April 2018

20th April 2018Miss T Carnaby

Dear Parents/Carers
I hope you had a lovely Easter Holiday although it would be have been nice to have some of the weather we are enjoying today during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Fortunately the weather wasn’t quite so warm on Wednesday when our school cross country team took part in a competition at Longridge Towers School. The event attracted a number of really good runners from over Scotland and the North of England however our students did very well in such a competitive field. Particular mention goes to Molly in the U11 Girls event who finished 2nd and to Steven who finished 6th in the U10 event. Well done to everyone who took part.

Also on Wednesday we had a rehearsal for the 54 strong dance troupe who are performing during the half time interval on the Saturday of the Rugby League Magic Weekend event at St James Park, Newcastle on May 19th. I saw the rehearsal and was very impressed.

Mr Heath was very impressed with the attitude of the six girls who took part in a Girls Football leadership course at Sunderland Football Club on Thursday. These girls will be leading a Girls Football Club in KS2 and will very much involved in Girls Football Week – a nationwide event that our school will be taking part in.

Year 8 Sports Leaders were involved in a Tennis Leaders training on Monday and the facilitator commented on the excellent attitude of all those who took part.

Today was an additional Non-Uniform Day run to raise money for The Sick Children’s Trust – as a charity, they support around 1000 families each year through their ‘Homes from Home’ in Newcastle upon Tyne; families who come from across the North East, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders to receive specialist care for their seriously ill child at the Freeman, Royal Victoria Infirmary and Great North Children’s Hospital. I am sure you agreed that this was a worthy cause and I am delighted we raised £307.26. Thank you to all those who contributed and to all those pupils who baked cakes for a cake sale.

Well done to all of these award winners!

A special well done to Edward and Bertie in Year 7.
Edward took part in a North East Grand Prix event at Jarrow and came second in a group with year 7 to year 10’s. The boy who won is a year 10 and one of the best athletes at mixed throwing events in the UK. Edward was the youngest in the event.

Bertie made the trip south to Prestwold Hall near Leicester on Saturday 24th March for the National Year 7 Boys Cross Country Championships as part of the Northumberland team. Bertie ran a great race and came 42nd out of 200 finalists and the Northumberland team raced brilliantly as a team and came away as Runners Up ahead of Cumbria and behind the Champions – Kent.

Have a good weekend,

Liam
